Foods to Avoid with Braces

Unfortunately, many foods can damage the braces or get caught in the teeth and affect your treatment. Eating the correct foods is essential to a successful treatment at Smile Studios Orthodontics. We offer braces and other orthodontic services to residents of Atlanta, Marietta and the neighboring areas of Georgia from our locations in Lovejoy, Fairburn and Powder Springs.

Eating with Braces

Foods to Avoid with BracesAfter receiving braces, you won’t be able to eat the same foods that you could eat without braces. Foods that are hard, crunchy, chewy or sticky can easily damage the braces, negatively impacting your treatment. If your braces are damaged, you will have to make an appointment to repair your braces, which can extend the length of your treatment. Plus, food that can get caught in your braces can threaten your oral health, so it’s important to make the right food choices.

What Foods Should I Eat?

As long as you are avoiding the foods that can damage your braces, you can eat whatever you’d like. However, since braces frequently cause soreness, there are several foods that patients like to keep around. These include:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Ice cream
  • Yogurt
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Bananas
  • Fish
  • Pasta or Rice

What Foods Should I Avoid?

Here are some foods you need to avoid in order to prevent damage to your braces:

  • Hard foods – Nuts, candy, ice
  • Crunchy foods – Popcorn, chips, raw vegetables
  • Chewy foods – Bagels and bread crust
  • Sticky foods – Gum, caramels and candies
  • Food you have to bite into – Apples, corn on the cob
